MCK issues clarification on police actions regarding First Nations Winery
05/12/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that a police operation earlier today targeting certain persons affiliated with First Nations Winery did not take place on or within the Territory.
The MCK has been in contact with the Kahnawake Peacekeepers, who did not participate in the police actions. While media reports indicate that a warrant had been issued for the proprietor of the business, the community is being made aware that Peacekeepers are not exercising the warrant, as the proprietor holds a Permit to Operate issued by the Kahnawà:ke Alcoholic Beverages Control Board (‘ABC Board’).
The MCK reassures the community that it has an obligation to uphold and defend Kahnawà:ke jurisdiction. However, there is much information to gather and analyze, and the MCK states that it is too early to offer an official comment or position based on lack of adequate information. Chief & Council are working diligently to ensure the community is informed on any developments on this issue.
