Council supports Make Kahnawake Stop Day safety initiative
05/19/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that Chief & Council are in full support on a community member’s movement to declare Friday, May 29th as “Make Kahnawà:ke Stop Day.”
Timmy Norton has taken the initiative on the matter because of the number of vehicles that either do not stop, or fail to stop completely, at Kahnawà:ke stop signs. He is most concerned about the high number of vehicles making ‘rolling stops’ at school crossings. He made a request for support to Chief & Council; additionally, he brought up the topic at the Spring Community Meeting held on Tuesday, May 12th.
Chief & Council will participate in this safety initiative and hope that it brings much-needed awareness to this issue. The plan calls for community members to stand by stop signs of their choice between 10am and 12 noon on that date.
The Kahnawake Peacekeepers and the MCK’s Community Protection Unit have also pledged their support.
