Important notice to community regarding phone fraud scam

06/23/2015

The Kahnawake Peacekeepers are warning community members that fraudulent telephone calls in which the caller identifies him/herself as an RCMP officer calling to collect fines or income taxes or a variety of other scam tactics.

The callers inform their targets/victims that they must pay immediately or they will be arrested within 24 hours. In most cases, the number of the RCMP national Headquarters general inquiries line (613-993-7267) appears on the victim’s call display.

“We have had several Kahnawa’kehró:non say that they have received these calls in the past 24 hours,” said Assistant Chief Peacekeepers Jody Diabo. “We know for a fact that the RCMP never contacts individuals for the purpose of collecting fines or taxes.”

Anyone who receives such a call should hang up immediately and contact the Peacekeepers and/or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center.

“The Peacekeepers are asking community members to pass this information around to anyone they know,” she added. “No police force or agency ever asks the public to make any type of payment over the telephone. Scammers are getting trickier every day. People need to be wary and always on their guard.”
