Chief & Council unanimously sign Declaration of Office
06/24/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that the newly-elected Chief & Council unanimously signed the Declaration of Office this morning. Today marked the first official meeting of the 2015-2018 term of office. Joseph Tokwiro Norton returns to the office of Grand Chief after an eleven year absence. He had previously served as Grand Chief from 1978-2004. Arlene Jacobs also returns to Council for the first time in nine years. The other 10 Chiefs were all incumbents. “We pretty much hit the ground running,” said Grand Chief Norton. “There is a lot to catch up on and a lot of work to do, so the next few weeks are going to be especially busy. Fortunately, there is a lot of consistency at the table. Everyone’s been here before, even Arlene and I.” “I’d like to acknowledge Mike Delisle and Lloyd Phillips for their hard work and dedication for the past several years,” he added. “Lloyd was first elected in 1996 and Mike in 1998, so there is a lot of experience that we have to make up for. We wish them well.”
