Several Chiefs attending AFN Annual General Assembly being held in Montreal

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton, along with Council Chiefs Clinton Phillips, Gina Deer, Arlene Jacobs and Christine Zachary-Deom, are attending the 36th annual Assembly of First Nations (AFN) General Assembly being held today, Wednesday and Thursday in Montreal.
This year’s General Assembly is entitled “Closing the Gap: Building Nations, Asserting Sovereignty.” Agenda items include plenary and strategy sessions on such topics as Lands, Waters and Environment Protection; First Nations and Energy Development; Indigenous Languages; Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls; Education; and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Additionally, a special event commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 1990 Oka Crisis is being held this evening at the Hotel Bonaventure, which will include a special screening of Alanis O’Bomsawin’s award-winning documentary “Kanehsatake: 270 years of Resistance.” The event, entitled “Where Are We Now?” is being presented by Quebec Regional Chief Ghislain Picard. The event will be held from 5pm to 7pm and is open to the public.
