Several Chiefs attending AFN Annual General Assembly being held in Montreal

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton, along with Council Chiefs Clinton Phillips, Gina Deer, Arlene Jacobs and Christine Zachary-Deom, are attending the 36th annual Assembly of First Nations (AFN) General Assembly being held today, Wednesday and Thursday in Montreal.
This year�s General Assembly is entitled �Closing the Gap: Building Nations, Asserting Sovereignty.� Agenda items include plenary and strategy sessions on such topics as Lands, Waters and Environment Protection; First Nations and Energy Development; Indigenous Languages; Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls; Education; and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Additionally, a special event commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 1990 Oka Crisis is being held this evening at the Hotel Bonaventure, which will include a special screening of Alanis O�Bomsawin�s award-winning documentary �Kanehsatake: 270 years of Resistance.� The event, entitled �Where Are We Now?� is being presented by Quebec Regional Chief Ghislain Picard. The event will be held from 5pm to 7pm and is open to the public.
