Ship loses power in Seaway, hits north wall

The Emergency Preparedness and Planning Department (EPP) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke is informing the community that a ship had run aground in the Saint Lawrence Seaway at approximately 3:30am this morning.

The ship, Jo Spirit, lost complete power while navigating downbound the Seaway channel and, as a result, veered off course and hit the north wall. 

EPP personnel have confirmed with the ship′s crew that there is no breach to the vessel. No injuries or danger to the environment have been confirmed.

"We′re relieved that there was no breach to the ship," said General Manager of Emergency Preparedness and Planning, Kellyann Meloche. "Now, it′s just a matter of waiting until the ship is towed."

A tug boat has been dispatched to tow the vessel today.
