10/22/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton will be attending an event today to meet Diane Humetewa, the first Native American female Federal judge in the United States.
Judge Humetewa, who is an enrolled member of the Hopi Nation, was nominated for the position by President Barack Obama and was confirmed by a vote of 96-0 by the U.S. Senate on May 15 of this year. She had previously served as an appellate court judge for the Hopi Nation court. She is also a professor and special counsel for Arizona State University.
She is in Montreal to meet with students of the McGill University law program. Grand Chief Norton was invited by the U.S. Consulate in Montreal for a special reception in her honor taking place this afternoon.
“I was very pleased and honored to be invited to meet with Judge Humetewa,” said Grand Chief Norton. “Her accomplishments speak for themselves, and she obviously has the confidence of not only the Hopi people, but the government of the United States and the President himself. She is a role model of the highest degree.”
