The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to advise the community that Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton, along with Chiefs Bobby Patton and Martin Leborgne, are attending an emergency meeting of Quebec chiefs and leaders being held today in Val d’Or.
The meeting was called to address the issue of allegations of physical and sexual abuse by some members of the Sûreté du Quebec against aboriginal women in the area. The area is largely populated by members of both the Algonquin and Cree Nations.
A television report broadcast last week uncovered allegations of abuse by several police officers.
