10/27/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is reminding community members that the creation of a regulatory law regarding the tobacco industry begins this Thursday with the First Hearing of the proposed Kahnawà:ke Tobacco Law.
As is the procedure for creating and amending Kahnawà:ke laws, the meeting will be conducted using the Community Decision Making Process.
- Date: Thursday, 29 Kenténha/October 2015
- Time: 6pm to 8:30pm
- Location: Knights of Columbus Hall
“The process of actually making decisions on the law begins now,” said Chief Gina Deer who, along with Chief Bobby Patton, is responsible for the Tobacco file on behalf the MCK. “There has been a lot of preliminary work done to get to this point, but the time has come for Kahnawa’kehró:non to turn out and help create a law that will help protect and regulate the industry and be acceptable to the community.”
“There is no doubt that this will be a challenge, but both the MCK and the Kahnawake Tobacco Association are committed to the process,” she concluded. “It has been a priority and it definitely remains a priority.”
The agenda includes a description of the role of the Community Representatives (who will be selected later in the process); Section #1 (Jurisdiction); Section #2 (Paramountcy); and Section #3 (Intent and Purpose).
