Illegal dumping still a major concern
10/28/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s Landfill Authority wishes to inform the community that there have been several troubling incidents where community members and external contractors have transported landfill in the Territory without the required permits. In some instances, the vigilance of community members assisted in intercepting the perpetrators. It is our understanding that, despite our best efforts, unauthorized dumping may be continuing.
The Landfill Authority is reminding the community that it is prohibited to deliver or receive landfill without the requisite operating permits, as per sections 16.1 and 16.2 of the Kahnawà:ke Sanitary Conditions Law, K.R.L. c. S-1.
Permits for landfilling, which are issued in conformity with the Interim Landfill Procedures for Clean Soil, can be obtained at the Landfill Office (450-632-0635). These procedures have been implemented to ensure that all activities are transparent and individuals are held accountable for the quality of the material entering the Territory.
The Landfill Authority is asking Kahnawa’kehró:non to remain vigilant and to help keep the community free of unacceptable material that may be harmful to the environment. Kindly report any suspicious dumping to the Landfill Office during regular business hours, or the Kahnawake Peacekeepers (450-632-6505) after hours and on weekends.
The community is being reminded that authorized landfilling is only permitted during regular business hours (7am to 5pm from Monday to Friday), unless special authorization has been provided by the Landfill Authority.
The Landfill Authority is the body mandated by the MCK to oversee all matters related to landfill within the Territory and to ensure all materials meet Kahnawà:ke’s rigorous environmental standards.
