Grand Chief to attend AFNQL Chiefs meeting with Quebec Premier Couillard
11/03/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to announce that Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton will be attending a meeting tomorrow morning between the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec & Labrador (AFNQL) and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard.
The meeting was called to address the issue of certain Sûreté du Quebec police officers who are accused of sexual and physical abuse against Indigenous women in the Val d’Or region. The AFNQL is demanding that the Quebec government holds an independent inquiry into the situation.
“The level or depth of this problem is staggering,” said Grand Chief Norton. “The Premier has the opportunity to do the right thing tomorrow morning, and we are certain he understands the enormity of this issue. This is about institutionalized racism on the part of some police officers, and we believe that the only way to get to the root of the problem is to conduct an independent inquiry.”
The meeting is scheduled for 7:30am at the Delta Hotel.
