Environment Portfolio Chief invited to discuss findings of report on Montreal’s plan to discharge billions of liters of raw sewage

11/06/2015

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips will be attending a meeting today in Montreal to discuss the findings of the final report on the City of Montreal’s plan to discharge eight billion liters of untreated (raw) sewage into the St. Lawrence River.

The report was prepared by a group of independent experts in response to a public outcry concerning the controversial plan.

The meeting will include representatives from Environment Canada, the City of Montreal, Quebec government and unspecified First Nations communities. The MCK received the invitation yesterday afternoon.

“It’s short notice but we’re assembling our team,” said Chief Phillips. “We’ll see what is in the report and hear what they have to say and proceed from there. We’ll report back to Chief & Council and the community. They know where we stand, and we are holding our position. They have a duty to consult and we’re holding them to it.”
