Tobacco Law Hearings back on track tomorrow (Thursday) evening

01/13/2016

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to remind the community that the next meeting on the draft Kahnawà:ke Tobacco Law is scheduled to take place tomorrow (Thursday) evening at the Karonhianóhnha School Gymnasium.

In an unprecedented move, the agenda items from the 29, Kenténha/October agenda will be repeated.

“We will be re-addressing the first four sections of the law,” said Tobacco Portfolio Chief Gina Deer. “At the first meeting, it was noted that not all of the community members’ comments were included in the documentation that was used. Therefore, to ensure the integrity of the process, the MCK and the representatives of the Kahnawake Tobacco Association are ensuring that the unaddressed comments are dealt with on Thursday.”

The aforementioned comments had initially been placed at the end of the draft documents that were used at the October 29th meeting. Only comments that were placed in the main document were used during the October 29th discussions and deliberations.

“It was realized that the formatting of the comments was problematic and we had no choice but to address the matter,” Chief Deer continued. “On the plus side the first meeting went extremely well, with good discussion and debate. I’m confident that people will understand that the integrity of the process is just as important as the decisions that are made.”

The agenda is as follows:

1.    Jurisdiction
2.    Paramountcy
3.    Intent and Purpose
4.    Scope
5.    Definitions (time permitting)

The meeting will begin at 6pm sharp and will end at 8:30pm unless the agenda is completed earlier.
