DANGER, ICE SAFETY ALERT

02/17/2016

The Public Safety Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) is issuing an Ice Safety Alert for all Kahnawą:ke waterways and strongly recommends that all motor vehicles and pedestrians refrain from venturing onto the ice, most particularly in the area of Recreation Bay.

Unpredictable winter weather patterns this year are causing the freezing of our waterways to be significantly abnormal. As a result, certain areas that would have been more deeply frozen in the past are unsafe. Two areas have been identified where vehicles are entering on unsafe ice conditions:
     1. Johnson′s Beach
     2. The Elders′ Lodge

Signage warning vehicles and pedestrians "Danger NO ACCESS" will be posted in these areas.

The MCK and the Kahnawake Marina have consulted on the issue of Ice Racing activities. Event organizers report that they do test the ice for thickness, but only in the area of the raceway. The MCK Public Safety Unit (or any other organization/department) does Not perform testing to ensure safe access to the ice in any other area.

Therefore, the MCK does not in any way condone any type of motor vehicle or pedestrian access to Kahnawą:ke′s waterways at any time. Such activities are at the entire risk of the person entering the waterways for whatever reason.
