Action taken in regard to illegal landfill activity

02/22/2016

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK)  wishes to advise the community that there will be a landfill removal project taking place today in an area on Route 207 in Kahnawą:ke.

Illegal dumping activities took place in the area of Zachary Road during October 2015. The Kahnawą:ke Peacekeepers were dispatched and an arrest was made at that time. The offender pleaded guilty in the Court of Kahnawą:ke and received a fine.

Furthermore, the individual has agreed to remove the dumped material from the site and transport it off the Territory. The Landfill Coordinator’s Office will be on site to ensure compliance.

“We were able to resolve this issue thanks to the vigilance of community members,” said Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips. “The reason the regulations are in place is to protect Kahnawą:ke from contaminated soil and other materials. If you bring in any illegal material to our community and are caught, we will use any and all means to hold you accountable.”
