02/22/2016
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is reminding Kahnawa’kehró:non that the agenda is set for tomorrow (Tuesday) evening’s Hearing into proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law. The agenda is as follows:
- The definition of ‘Kanien’keháka Great Grandparent’ – specifically its reference to ‘Kanien’keháka lineage’ – will be revisited, as there was concern that the term “…has Kanien’keháka lineage” is too vague and may be open to interpretation.
- Section 13: Instatement and Reinstatement (formerly section 10.3, now moves to this section)
- Section 14: Adopted Children. Major redraft of this section, with topic of adopted children being treated in a similar manner to other First Nations/Onkwehonwe children
- Relevant/related Definitions (Section 4) will be addressed as they arise
“The discussion and deliberations have been very effective,” said Chief Arlene Jacobs, who holds the membership Portfolio with Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “We’re hoping that the decision to have meetings every two weeks will keep the momentum going in order to complete this part of the amendment process.”
Tomorrow’s meeting is the eight in the First Hearing phase of the Community Decision Making Process. It will take place from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Golden Age Club.
