Ron Skye new Public Safety Commissioner
03/31/2016
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Ron Skye will assume the position of Public Safety Commissioner on Friday, April 1st. Skye has worked in Kahnawà:ke′s Justice system for the past 20 years and currently holds the title of Director of Justice Services. Skye moves to head the newly created Public Safety Commission, a unit that will exist separately from Justice Services, and will incorporate the Public Safety Unit (Animal Protection, Emergency Planning and Preparedness) and the Kahnawake Peacekeepers, as well as establish relationships with the Kahnawake Fire Brigade and Kahnawake Shakotiia′takehnhas Community Services as it relates to public safety matters. “Ron has been instrumental in the development and growth of Justice Services during his many years, playing key roles in both Justice and Community Safety," said MCK Executive Director Alana Goodleaf-Rice. "However, with the continuous expansion and assertion of our jurisdiction, it is time that these two areas of governance are separated to operate independently from each other." “I would like to congratulate Ron on his new role as Commissioner of Public Safety," Goodleaf Rice continued. "I am certain that he will expand and develop the jurisdictional elements of Public Safety within the community as diligently and determinedly as he has with Justice.”
Kevin Fleischer has been serving as Associate Director of Justice Services and will officially assume the full Directorship as of Tuesday, April 5th (press release to follow).
“I would further like to congratulate Maître Kevin Fleischer in his official role as Director of Justice Services," said Goodleaf-Rice. Maître Fleischer has been with the MCK’s legal department for many years and plays a significant role in the organization. I have full confidence that he will succeed Mr. Skye with success.” The Public Safety Commission offices will be located at the former Community Protection Building (old PK Station). The Director of Justice Services office will remain at the Court of Kahnawà:ke.
