Membership Hearing resumes next Tuesday April 12 at Golden Age Club

04/07/2016

The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to remind the community that the next meeting on proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law will be held next Tuesday at the Golden Age Club.

In regard to the ongoing discussion and debate on the Definition of ‘Great Grand Parent,’ the Membership Department will present lineage charts to show how the Definition would be impacted by requiring blood quantum of 25%, 30% and 50%, each of which were various options proposed by the community members in attendance. The topic has been an agenda item for the past several meetings and has yet to be firmly resolved. Blood quantum is not replacing Great Grandparents in the law.

In regard to Section 15.1 (‘Application Process/Approved Kahnawà:ke Residents’), consensus was reached at the March 22, 2016 meeting to add a provision to Section 15.1 to require criminal background checks for anyone applying to become an Approved Kahnawà:ke Resident. However, it was suggested that the term ‘some Kanien’kehá:ka lineage’ was open to interpretation, so participants are expected to propose a minimum requirement, similar to the above proposal. As such, discussion/debate on Section 15.1 will continue where it left off.

Should Section 15 be completed, the meeting will continue with Section 16 (‘Entitlements of Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke’); Section 17 (‘Privileges of Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke’); Section 18 (‘Responsibilities of Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke’) and Section 19 (‘Obligations of Approved Kahnawà:ke Residents’).

This will be the eleventh meeting in this First Hearing phase of the Community Decision Making Process. It is scheduled to begin at 6pm sharp and run until 8:30pm. Copies of the proposed amendments can be viewed at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com , which is the KLCC website.
