No consensus at Membership Law Hearing, next meeting set for Tuesday, April 26
04/13/2016
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to inform the community that no consensus was reached at last evening’s Hearing on proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law.
While the agenda included the Definition of ‘Great Grand Parent’ and Sections 15 to 19, the entire meeting consisted of discussion and debate on the Definition. As requested by community members in attendance at the March 22, 2016 meeting, the Membership Department presented lineage charts to show how the Definition would be impacted by requiring blood quantum of 25%, 30%, 40% and 50%, each of which were various options proposed by the community members at the aforementioned meeting.
The topic has been an agenda item for the past several meetings and has yet to be firmly resolved.
Approximately 35 Kahnawa’kehró:non participated.
The next meeting, using the same agenda, will be held at the Golden Age Club on Tuesday, April 26, 2016. It will be the twelfth meeting in this First Hearing phase of the Community Decision Making Process.
Copies of the proposed amendments can be viewed at the KLCC website at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com.
