Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett visits Kahnawake
04/29/2016
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that Canada’s Minister of Indigenous & Northern Affairs Carolyn Bennett is in Kahnawà:ke today to meet with Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton.
The visit will begin with tours of the community, then the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis lands. The main agenda item is a discussion on the renewal of the relationship between Canada and the MCK.
“The Trudeau government has stated that Canada’s relationship with First Nations is right at the top of the list of its priorities,” said Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. “With that in mind, I am looking forward to meeting with Minister Bennett in the hope of reestablishing a proper Nation-to Nation relationship with the Canadian government – something that was severely problematic during the Harper years.”
“Without getting too specific, I can say that we will discuss our relationship, the Seigneury, The Kahnawà:ke/Canada Relations (K/CR) process and several other matters,” he concluded.
This will be Minister Bennett’s first official visit to the community since assuming her duties last fall.
