Make Kahnawake Stop tomorrow from 10am to 12 noon
05/26/2016
The Public Safety Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to remind the community that a special one-day safety awareness campaign regarding Stop Signs will take place tomorrow (Friday, 27 Onerahtohkó:wa/May) throughout Kahnawà:ke.
Last year’s initial event, ‘Make Kahnawà:ke Stop,’ was created due to concerns that some drivers failed to obey stop signs. Special concern was raised regarding school zones, where significant numbers of drivers either slowed down or did rolling stops – neither of which is safe, acceptable or legal.
This years’ version of “Make Kahnawà:ke Stop is co-sponsored by the Kahnawake Peacekeepers. Community members are encouraged to participate from 10am to 12 noon by gathering near various stop signs to help ‘remind’ drivers to make a complete stop.
The Peacekeepers will have extra officers on the road beginning at 6am on that day. Last year approximately 35 tickets were issued, despite the advance warning that the event was to take place.
