Membership Law Hearing this coming Tuesday
06/03/2016
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to remind the community that the next meeting on proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law will take place this coming Tuesday, 7 Ohiarí:ha/June 7, 2016.
The first item on the agenda will be the Definition of ‘Great Grand Parent.’ This key issue, which has been in discussion for several meetings, came close to conclusion during the previous meeting. A proposal from a community member included removing the earlier-proposed ‘50% blood quantum requirement’ and, instead, using Sha’tehatinekwenhsí:hen, a term which, roughly translated, means ‘a person who comes from two cultures in approximately equal measures.’ There are still certain details that will need further discussion on Tuesday in order for this definition to be finalized.
Other agenda items include Section 15 (Application Process/Approved Kahnawà:ke Residents); Section 16 (Entitlements of the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke); Section 17 (Privileges of Approved Kahnawà:ke Residents); Section 18 (Responsibilities of the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke) and any relevant or affected Definitions.
The meeting will be held from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Golden Age Club. This will be the 13th meeting in this First Hearing phase of the Community Decision Making Process. The law is available for viewing at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com .
