Important Notice regarding dangerous area at Tioweroton
06/03/2016
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise community members who frequent the Tioweró:ton Territory that there is a dangerous situation regarding the ‘Sand Pit’ area.
Due to heavy rains and excess water, a large area at the rear portion of the Sand Pit has become highly unstable, with quicksand-like properties observed.
Ratitsénhaienhs Billy Diabo and Clinton Phillips conducted a site visit earlier today and confirmed that the area is dangerous.
“Two all-terrain vehicles have already been trapped in the pit,” said Ratsénhaienhs Phillips. “Fortunately, they were not travelling alone and were able to escape. Our worry is that kids use the Sand Pit area for recreation and could be in danger should they be riding alone and become trapped.”
“Additionally, the area is a significant distance from any cabins,” he added. “We thought it would be important for people, especially parents, to get the message out to avoid the Sand Pit until the caretakers deem the area safe.”
