Reminder � Membership Law Hearing tonight

The Kahnaw�:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to remind the community that a meeting on proposed amendments to the Kahnaw�:ke Membership Law will take place this evening (Tuesday).

The first item on the agenda will be the Definition of �Great Grand Parent.� This key issue, which has been in discussion for several meetings, came close to conclusion on 17 Onerahtohk�:wa/May 2016. A proposal from a community member included removing the earlier-proposed �50% blood quantum requirement� and, instead, using Sha�tehatinekwenhs�:hen, a term which, roughly translated, means �a person who comes from two cultures in approximately equal measures.� There are still certain details that will need further discussion in order for this definition to be finalized.

Other agenda items include Section 15 (Application Process/Approved Kahnaw�:ke Residents); Section 16 (Entitlements of the Kanien�keh�:ka of Kahnaw�:ke); Section 17 (Privileges of Approved Kahnaw�:ke Residents); Section 18 (Responsibilities of the Kanien�keh�:ka of Kahnaw�:ke) and any relevant or affected Definitions.

The meeting will be held from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Golden Age Club and will be the 13th in this First Hearing phase of the Community Decision Making Process. The law is available for viewing at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com.
