Community urged to beware of email scam
07/07/2016
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community to beware of an email scam that is using a ‘potential tax refund’ as the basis for its fraudulent intent.
An email purportedly from the Canada Revenue Agency requesting confirmation for a tax refund is fraudulent. A link provided in the email is used to attempt to have victims enter private and personal information.
Please note that the aforementioned email appears to be official, it is not. Under NO circumstances does the Canada Revenue Agency ever send email notifications regarding tax refunds. Anyone receiving such emails should NOT respond.
The MCK was made aware of the scam by community members. Additionally, Revenue Canada, on its website, has issued a warning to the public on this matter.
While there are many obvious scams that are distributed on the Internet or via email, this one appears more realistic than most. Those receiving such emails are asked to report it to the Kahnawake Peacekeepers at (450) 632-6505.
