MCK announces Political Priorities for remainder of the term

08/11/2016

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like advise the community that the Political Agenda for the remainder of the 2015-2018 term has been finalized and was announced at the Summer Community Meeting on August 9th.

Seven key priority areas have been identified, as follows:

  • MCK Governance
  • Membership and Residency
  • Kahnawà:ke’s Economy
  • Kahnawà:ke Justice and Legislative Systems
  • Political Relationships
  • Health and Social services
  • Community Engagement
“The priority-setting was carried out in phases and took several months to complete,” said Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. “The list we created can be looked upon as a means to help us focus our efforts on our most essential issues and needs. The community should understand that political situations may arise that could affect the priorities but, in general, we’re confident that this is a solid reflection of our current realities.”

Additionally, key Political Principles were confirmed by Chief & Council during the process, which will help guide decision-making and planning. These principles will serve as a guide for Chief & Council to align decisions and planning with the general principles based on the cultural values of the community.
