08/24/2016
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to thank the community for making yesterday’s ‘Chiefs Picnic in the Park’ a success. Ratsénhaienhs Clinton Phillips, who was one of the main organizers, estimated that over two hundred Kahnawa’kehrò:non attended during the course of the event held at Matty’s Park.
“The event was conceived as a means of community engagement – one of Chief & Council’s seven main priorities this term – where community members could have some lunch, enjoy themselves and ask the Chiefs questions in a friendly, informal setting,” said Phillips. “The weather was perfect, the turnout was great and people had fun. It was great to see so many elders and kids taking part.”
“Each of the Chiefs donated a school bag filled with school supplies to be won by kids who answered skill-testing questions,” said Ietsénhaienhs Rhonda Kirby, who was also one of the main organizers. “They (the children) loved it. I couldn’t be more pleased with the way the day turned out.”
Among the many topics that community members brought to the Chiefs’ attention was the recent sale of Continent 8 shares, language initiatives, environment & land issues and the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis.
