Quebec Minister of Finance meets with MCK

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that Quebec�s Minister of Finance Carlos Leit�o was in Kahnaw�:ke today to meet with Chief & Council.

Minister Leit�o was accompanied by Native Affairs Minister Geoffrey Kelley.

The main agenda item was a discussion on Nation to Nation fiscal matters. A visit to Tewatohnhi�saktha, Kahnaw�:ke�s Economic Development Agency, was also on the itinerary.

�I think today�s meeting was very important,� said Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. �We have had several visits by various government ministers in the past year, but there is some significance in the fact that the province�s Finance Minister came to Kahnaw�:ke today.�

�We are pleased that Mr. Leit�o seemed to gain a better understanding about the complex nature of our situation and relationship,� he added. �He made a statement to the effect that we need more face-to-face discussions on an ongoing basis � without delay. This is exactly what we hoped for. We�re ready to roll up our sleeves.�
