09/16/2016
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that Quebec’s Minister of Finance Carlos Leitão was in Kahnawà:ke today to meet with Chief & Council.
Minister Leitão was accompanied by Native Affairs Minister Geoffrey Kelley.
The main agenda item was a discussion on Nation to Nation fiscal matters. A visit to Tewatohnhi’saktha, Kahnawà:ke’s Economic Development Agency, was also on the itinerary.
“I think today’s meeting was very important,” said Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. “We have had several visits by various government ministers in the past year, but there is some significance in the fact that the province’s Finance Minister came to Kahnawà:ke today.”
“We are pleased that Mr. Leitão seemed to gain a better understanding about the complex nature of our situation and relationship,” he added. “He made a statement to the effect that we need more face-to-face discussions on an ongoing basis – without delay. This is exactly what we hoped for. We’re ready to roll up our sleeves.”
