Kahnawake Sports Complex to undergo major renovations

01/24/2017

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) announced today that the Kahnawake Sports Complex will undergo a $419,385 renovation.

The project will comprise renovations to the building and the repair of the parking lot. Various works are planned, including the replacement of the ice system; plumbing; seating areas (railings and seats); indoor painting; exterior lighting; repaving of the parking lot; replacement of the Zamboni; and installation of air conditioning for the snack bar area.

Funding in the amount of $269,164 will be provided by Canada Economic Development. Costs for the Zamboni and snack bar will be funded by the MCK, using self-generated revenues.

This project is being carried out in context of Canada’s 150th anniversary  celebrations, on the theme of ‘A Better Future for Indigenous Peoples.’

“Hundreds of children use the arena every week,” said Ratsénhaienhs Carl Horn. “Over the years a great number of community members have learned the value of sport in this facility. We are pleased to acknowledge Canada Economic Development for their contribution to this most worthwhile and important project.”

Work is expected to begin in the weeks to come. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the 2017-2018 fiscal year (March 31, 2018).
