Ietsénhaienhs Sky-Deer attending Native Nation Citizenship conference in Arizona

03/09/2017

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that Ietsénhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer is in Tucson, Arizona to participate in a two-day conference entitled From Tribal Kinship to Native Nation Citizenship to Disenrollment.

The conference will gather attendees to explore questions relating to citizenship and community belonging in Indian Country. According to organizers, participants will have an opportunity to explore the question ‘Who belongs?’ – considered a foundational aspect of self-governance and self-determination for Native nations and critical question for the future of any nation.

Oren Lyons, Turtle Clan Faithkeeper of the Onondaga Council of Chiefs is one of the invited speakers, as is Pamela Palmater, Associate Professor and Chair of Indigenous Governance at Ryerson University.

“I’m looking forward to learning, networking and participating at this important event,” said Ietsénhaienhs Sky-Deer, who holds the Membership portfolio with the MCK. “These are issues that we have in common with so many Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island. The more we share our stories, situations and challenges, the more opportunities we will have to create better solutions.”
