MCK to attend info session on Descheneaux Decision and S-3

03/21/2017

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise Kahnawa’kehró:non that Ietsénhaienhs Arlene Jacobs and Membership Registrar Rose-Ann Morris are attending an all-day information session today regarding the Descheneaux Decision and its impacts on the Indian Act.

The Quebec Superior Court’s August 2015 decision in the Descheneaux case resulted in the Federal government announcing it would amend the Indian Act to rid the law of rules that discriminate based on sex. The original deadline of February 3, 2017 to impose amendments was delayed to this upcoming July.

The event is being hosted by the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec & Labrador to give context and additional information regarding the Descheneaux case; the proposed legislative amendments to the Indian Act; ‘to confirm that the proposed amendments provide the appropriate remedy’ and to discuss the question of further more in-depth Consultation with First Nations – which the Federal government announced it needed to do late last year.

The MCK has been consistent regarding its concerns in these matters, going so far as appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Indigenous & Northern Affairs this past November 30th.

The event is being held in Montreal.
