03/31/2017
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton met with Quebec Health Minister Gaetan Barette in Montreal on Monday, March 27th.
The topics of discussion were the possibility of a health related economic opportunity for Kahnawà:ke, the Youth Protection Act, and Certifications for Emergency Medical Technicians and Ambulance Workers and Drivers.
“It was good to finally meet the Minister to begin working towards settling a few key issues,” said the Grand Chief. “We needed to clear up problems with getting our EMTs and ambulance workers certified following changes within the Monteregie format which brought us under a whole new regime.”
Though it is outside the scope of his mandate, the Health Minister agreed to assist in advocating on Kahnawà:ke’s needs with regard to Youth Protection. He also agreed to work towards developing solutions in relation to our paramedic needs (ie: training, equipment). The health related economic opportunity discussion centered on legal parameters and jurisdiction.
