Tekakwitha Island Pollinator Garden expansion

06/06/2017

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) will be expanding the Pollinator Garden on Tekakwitha Island in an effort to increase and improve the habitat available for important pollinators like bees, butterflies, and other insects.

The work will take place on Wednesday, June 7th to Friday, June 9th, weather permitting. It will involve some excavation around the existing butterfly garden to create relief, allow spreading of good quality soil from a reputable nursery, sowing with a mixture of native wildflower seeds, and planting trees.

White pine, red oak, and yellow birch saplings will also be planted along the back edge of the Pollinator Garden to improve the forest habitat and biodiversity on the Island.

The Pollinator Garden and Forest Habitat will take a few years to become fully established. KEPO asks that community members not drive on or near the site, and avoid walking in the garden.

If you have any questions you can contact KEPO at 450-635-0600.
