Canadian Pacific Railway Vegetation Management Program
06/20/2017
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the Community that the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Vegetation Management Program will take place on the ballast section of the tracks – the stone between and directly adjacent to the tracks – on Wednesday, June 21st. In case weather conditions are not within the specified guidelines, alternate dates have been scheduled on Thursday and Friday, June 22nd and 23rd.
The application will happen only once this season and should take approximately one hour to complete. Weather conditions are strictly monitored and no spraying is done if wind conditions are greater than 8 KPH.
The process involves the use of specialized equipment that includes shrouds that prevent spray drift. No spraying will take place outside of the ballast section and all safety precautions will be taken, as is normal during these procedures.
The program is required to ensure the safe operations of passenger and freight trains and to maintain the structural integrity of the railway lines. The MCK has met with the Railway and has approved the process.
Please note that the MCK has agreed to form a working group consisting of community members, CP Railway and others to research for possible alternatives to the current use of (approved) herbicides in this program.
