New option for Landfill as Storage Site opens on trial basis

06/21/2017

The Kahnawà:ke Landfill Office wishes to advise the community that a Landfill Storage Facility is now in operation for the purpose of storing approved Landfill for distribution to Kahnawa’kehró:non who have made applications to receive material.

After the Landfill Office made its proposal for this project, an environmental assessment was carried out and the site approved by the Lands Committee. In accordance with the Landfill Policy and Procedures, all materials being stored will meet standards set in the Policy for Clean Soil in Kahnawà:ke.

This project was created because of the current situation, in which contractors (landfill providers) do not want to deliver and spread less than fifty (50) loads of material, is not cost-efficient for them.

“The Storage Facility was created as an option to community members to obtain clean landfill when required. The material is free; however, they will need to get a local contractor to deliver and spread the material at their cost,” said Landfill Coordinator Tracey Snow. “The current situation, in which the MCK’s Capital Unit provides landfill, does not guarantee delivery within a certain period of time – which is problematic for some people.”

“This provides another option for people receiving their residential landfilling needs on a timelier basis,” she added. “They are not obligated to take material from the site.”

The site is located on Seaway Road near the old Kahnawake Survival School entrance, where all precautions are in place to ensure the Landfill material does not exceed its intended boundaries by going into the Suzanne River (Creek) or marsh areas.

For information on this site or how to apply and receive Landfill, please contact Tracey Snow at the Landfill Office at 450-632-0635.
