Environment Portfolio Chief in Toronto to meet on Anti-Nuclear Waste with Ontario chiefs

08/30/2017

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is advising the community that Ratsénhaienhs Clinton Phillips, who holds the Environment Portfolio with the MCK, will be in Toronto tomorrow (Thursday) to participate in an all-day Anti-Nuclear Waste Working Group  strategy and planning meeting.

The ambitious agenda includes: the seeking of leadership direction on several nuclear waste issues that urgently need to be addressed, including planned underground storage repositories and the transportation of liquid radioactive waste on Anishinabek and Iroquois territories.

Both the Anishinabek Nation and the Iroquois Caucus have issued strong statements condemning the irresponsible actions being taken and/or contemplated regarding the disposal of radioactive waste from the nuclear industry.

“As we see another natural disaster unfold, this time in Texas, we realize that we have no way of controlling the outcome on life, property and prosperity,” said Ratsénhaienhs Phillips. “We have the chance to engage to make certain wrongs right with a collective voice – Mother Earth has been speaking to us but, unfortunately, not everyone is listening.”

“First Nations people have to step up to the plate to educate the Canadian population that they had better wake up and stop allowing their elected politicians to act in a manner that disrespects our shared environment and the safety of the future generations,” he continued.

“The actions we’re seeing could have inconceivable consequences,” Ratsénhaienhs Phillips concluded. “There is absolutely no way we can stand idly by while Mother Nature comes under direct threat by an industry and its regulators that have proven to be extremely short-sighted in their approach. This is a fine example of a fight I will not let die.”
