Hunting Advisory for New Brunswick and Listuguj areas
09/01/2017
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is advising Kahnawa’kehrò:non who plan to hunt in the New Brunswick and Listuguj areas to be aware of the following issues:
• Last fall, six Mohawk and four Mi’kmaq hunters were arrested by New Brunswick game wardens • They were charged with hunting without licenses and for being in possession of illegally obtained moose • The court cases are pending at this time • Other Mohawk hunters were stopped, but not charged, in the Listuguj area because they were accompanied by Mi’kmaq hunters
Please note that anyone who is not a resident may be subject to similar arrest and seizure by the game wardens.
Ratsénhaienhs Bobby Patton currently is the chair of the Iroquois Caucus Harvest Working Group, which is actively addressing this issue. Any questions should be addressed to him or Dennis Diabo, the MCK technician working on the file.
“Now that hunting season is upon us, we felt it was important to remind hunters that there are issues that have not yet been resolved,” said Ratsénhaienhs Patton. “We are continuing to work towards finding a solution that will ensure that our hunting rights are respected and that the transportability of our rights, as confirmed by various courts, is recognized.”
