Severe thunderstorm watch in effect

09/27/2017

The Public Safety Unit of the MCK is advising the community of the possibility of severe thunderstorms developing in the next few hours as a cold front moves into the area. Areas north of the St. Lawrence River will be the first affected, and the thunderstorms will move over the areas near the St. Lawrence around suppertime. The cold front will then affect areas south of the St. Lawrence River.

There is a risk of a tornado, strong wind gusts and heavy downpours with these thunderstorms.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees, and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Lightning kills and injures significant numbers of people every year.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail; damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Public Safety reminds Kahnawa’kehrò:non that, when thunder roars, go indoors.

If you have any questions or for more information please call the Public Safety Unit at (450) 632-0635.
