Archaeological Pit Testing taking place in area near Survival School
10/12/2017
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that archaeological pit testing is taking place in the area west of the Kahnawake Survival School.
This activity is part of the feasibility study in relation to the future Multi-Purpose Building that will house the Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language & Cultural Center (KORLCC); Museum; and Theatre. The pit testing is being conducted to ensure that the area being tested would not be considered an archaeological site.
A team of twelve (12) students under the direction of professional archaeologists is conducting the work. Five (5) of the students are from Kahnawà:ke.
A team consisting of KORLCC, the Turtle Island Theatre Company and the MCK will be consulting with community members and students at the Survival School on the project.
The activity will be completed by the end of October. Please note that the pit testing does not include the cutting or removal of any trees.
