Extreme cold weather persists - keep your home prepared

01/05/2018

The Public Works Department of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to remind homeowners to properly prepare their homes to avoid damages caused by the cold weather. With the sustained extreme cold temperatures, Public Works has been receiving reports of freezing pipes from local residents.

For mobile and older homes with a crawl space; seal up cracks and crevices in the foundation and close up any cellar/crawl space windows. Install foam sleeves around water lines with heat tape and make sure it is plugged in and functioning properly. Ensure that the skirt under the mobile home is properly closed up.

For all homeowners, shut off the water supply to your outside taps and leave the outside valve open to drain out any water to prevent damage from freezing. If you have previously experienced any problems with frozen pipes after extreme cold, it is recommended that you leave a cold water tap trickling when the temperature drops to extreme lows.

In case of emergency, contact the 24-Hour Waterline and Sewer Emergency Hotline at 514-891-9751
