Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Election Law amendments enacted

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that the amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Election Law were enacted at yesterday’s duly-convened Council meeting.
Consensus by the community to accept amendments to the Law had been reached on 15, Enníska/February 2018, using the Community Decision Making Process. Chief & Council unanimously passed a Mohawk Council Resolution (MCR #2/2017-2018) that enacted the Law and confirmed the Will of the People, thereby concluding the Process.
In addition, Chief & Council also unanimously passed a Mohawk Council Executive Directive (MCED #73/2017-2018) to ratify the Regulations attached to the Law.
The amendments include:
- setting a permanent date for elections (the first Saturday in July every three years);
- vetting of candidates for Electoral Officer by the Kahnawà:ke Justice Commission in preparation for the election of said Officer;
- establishment of a process for the review of pre-election decisions by the Electoral Officer;
- clarification of eligibility requirement that a nominee for Council Chief or Grand Chief must declare his/her private business holdings;
- and the transfer of several provisions into a regulation.
