Starting Grass Fires is Arson
04/23/2018
The Public Safety Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, in conjunction with the Kahnawake Fire Brigade and Kahnawake Peacekeepers, would like to remind all community members about the dangers of setting grass fires. Contrary to popular belief, burning the grass does not result in making the grass greener or grow quicker. In fact, it increases the possibility that the fire could become uncontrollable and do more damage to property. Even worse, emergency workers could be injured while responding to a very preventable situation, tying up community resources unnecessarily. If someone is seen starting fires, please contact the Peacekeepers at (450) 632-6505. Starting grass fires is arson and arson is a crime. Any damage to property is the responsibility of the arsonist. For more information on grass fires contact the Kahnawake Fire Brigade at (450) 632-2010 or the Public Safety Unit at (450) 632-0635.
