The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to advise the community that Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton, along with Kenitsénhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer and Rhonda Kirby, will be attending the Assembly of First Nations Special Chiefs Assembly taking place tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday in Gatineau.
Agenda items include First Nations Membership (S-3); the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; Cannabis legislation; and First Nations Languages Legislation.
“We need to make all First Nations aware of the real threats posed by Canada’s S-3 amendments to the Indian Act,” said Grand Chief Norton. “The recent Iroquois Caucus Membership/Citizenship Summit was a wake-up call for many in our own communities regarding the huge numbers of ‘new Indians’ that Canada is creating, and the expected impacts that their actions will cause.”
Several federal ministers are expected to attend, including both ministers in the now-separated Department of Indigenous Affairs & Northern Development: Carolyn Bennett (Minister of Crown - Indigenous Relations & Northern Affairs) and Jane Philpott (Minister of the Department of Indigenous Services Canada).
