04/30/2018
The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that it has received the decision in the case of Miller et al v. the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke.
The MCKs Legal Services team has immediately begun the task of reviewing the judgment. The team will present its report to Chief & Council on Thursday morning, as Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton, along with Ietsnhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer (who holds the Membership Portfolio) and Rhonda Kirby (who is responsible for the proposed Kahnaw:ke Residency Law) are currently in Gatineau for the Assembly of First Nations Special Chiefs Assembly.
Obviously we maintain the position that matters that are so integral to our identity have no business in outside courts, stated Grand Chief Norton. However, a decision on the case has been rendered. We are now taking the time to analyze the decision and will inform the community further in the coming days.
There will be no further comment until the analysis is completed.
