Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law Second Hearing meeting recap

The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to inform the community of the results of last evening’s fourth meeting of the Community Decision Making Process Second Hearing for proposed amendments to the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law.
Eight of the ten remaining Sections of the draft were passed. The recap is as follows:
- Section #9, Composition and Powers of the Community Review Board: passed as presented;
- Section #10, Application for Recognition: passed with minor changes in two clauses for clarity;
- Section #11, Adopted Children: one person objected to new wording added for clarity on one clause, but consensus was reached on the remainder;
- Section #13, Responsibilities of Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke: passed with the deletion of certain wording of one clause;
- Section #14, Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Pledge: passed with the deletion of wording referencing a welcoming ceremony;
- Section # 17, Renunciation: passed with an addition to one clause for clarity;
- Section #18, Regulations: passed as presented, and;
- Section #24, Transitory Provisions: passed as presented
The final two Sections (#15, Suspension of Entitlements and #16, Revocation of Entitlements) will be on the agenda for the next Hearing, scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 29 Onerahtohkó:wa/May 2018 at the Karonhianónhnha School gymnasium, from 6 to 8:30pm.
