Return of Parcel E 34 acres one step closer to finalization

05/17/2018

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce that 13.76 hectares (34 acres) comprising Parcel E (see map) has been officially accepted by the Federal Government in a move that brings the land closer to returning to reserve status under full control and jurisdiction of the community.

Parcel E was formerly held by the Ministčre des transports du Quebec and is located at the end of the Old Chateauguay Road. It is part of the agreement to return 700 acres to Kahnawą:ke following the extension of Highway 30. Parcels A through D are located on the north (Kahnawą:ke) side of Highway 30.

This action is the next step in the process to obtain reserve status for Parcels A, B, and E through a Federal Order in Council.

In October 2017, Parcel D, consisting of 224.82 acres located on the north side of Highway 30 adjacent to Chateauguay, was the first of the five designated parcels officially returned to reserve land status.

The Parcel C file is currently in the final stage of the Additions to Reserve process and has been submitted to the Federal Cabinet Treasury Board for their approval – at which time it will be designated reserve land.

Parcels A through E constitute 500 of the 700 acres designated for return.  At this time the remaining 200 acres have yet to be identified by Quebec.
