Radon Test Kits still available at KEPO

08/24/2018

The Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) wishes to remind Kahnawą:ke homeowners that it is seeking community members to participate in a Radon Testing Program to measure the levels of radon within different areas in the community. KEPO has twenty eight (28) kits remaining to distribute.

Community members are encouraged to pick up a free Radon Test Kit at the Environment Protection Office (located in the blue building next to the Peacekeeper station) and place it in the lowest occupied level of their house. Full instructions on installation will be provided.

KEPO will collect the kits in January 2019 and participants will be informed about the radon levels in their home and provided further information on remediation options if levels are found to be high.

For more information about radon or to participate in the program, please contact KEPO at (450) 635-0600 or environment.protection@mck.ca. Test kits will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.

About Radon
Radon is a naturally occurring gas that forms when uranium in the soil and rock break down and is usually released harmlessly outdoors. However, radon can be a hazard if it accumulates within an enclosed space such as a home. Ventilation, foundation condition, and soil conditions are among the different factors which can affect radon levels.

When radon levels are above the recommended level of 200 Bq/m³ it can cause damage to the lungs and can increase the risk of developing lung cancer. Fortunately, high levels of radon can be reduced by making modifications to your home.
