MCK concludes exploratory work on Kahnawake Mohawk Entertainment Resort

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that the MCK has completed the exploratory work on a proposal brought  forth by Thompson & Co. to build a casino/hotel/water park complex on the Territory.

The MCK had created a Working Group in April of 2018 to research and determine the validity of the proposal, with a mandate to present a report to Chief & Council by mid-August. This task has been completed.

�In effect, the proposal is no longer being discussed at this time,� said Iets�nhaienhs Gina Deer, who holds the Gaming Portfolio on behalf of the MCK. �We felt we had an obligation to address the proposal, as a petition was delivered with a significant number of signatories. Over the past few months we have met many times with the proponents, but there are simply too many unknowns, such as the lack of clarity regarding the MCK�s role, as well as issues related to the financing of the project.�

�In the end, Chief & Council were unanimous in their decision not to revisit the current public policy on a land-based casino at this time,� she concluded.
