MCK, Peacekeepers remind community that Moratorium on Retail Sales of Cannabis remains in place
09/12/2018
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke and the Kahnawake Mohawk Peacekeepers would like to remind the community that a Moratorium on Retail Sales within the Territory (‘Moratorium’) will remain in place until such time as the Kahnawà:ke Cannabis Control Law is adopted, and a determination is made as to whether the sale of cannabis on the Territory will be permitted.
“Canada’s ‘fast track’ legislation has not provided enough information, time and resources for Kahnawà:ke to have its own legislation in place at this time,” stated Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. “Therefore, in the interest of the community’s safety and health, the MCK last September 2017 unanimously passed a motion to place a moratorium on the manufacturing and distribution of cannabis on the Territory regardless of Canada’s laws.”
“There is zero tolerance in this matter,” said Chief Peacekeeper Dwayne Zacharie. “This remains a criminal matter. Until public policy changes, we have an obligation to ensure that the health and safety of our community remains our top priority.”
The Peacekeepers have conducted three separate raids on an illegal dispensary in the past several weeks, resulting in several arrests.
