Spring Thaw Hazards
04/09/2008
The Community Protection Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to make the community aware of the hazards and dangers related to creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes and the seaway during the spring thaw.
Since the remaining ice is unstable, we are asking that everyone keep away from all waterways. The creeks and streams are flowing faster than usual because of the melting snow and the ice breaker has already passed through the seaway channel making the adjacent frozen waterways unstable.
We are asking parents and guardians to watch for young children who may be playing close to these locations.
There has already been a death of a young child who fell through the Rivière Noire near Roxton Falls, and locally, a dog was stranded on the ice in the seaway and had to be rescued by Animal Control.
Please keep an eye out for our children and keep them safe.
